Duncan Tappy puts Spurs back on podium in Belgium
Superleague Formula – Zolder, Belgium
Race 1: Qualified 9th, Finished 12th
Race 2: Reverse grid start position 7th, Finished 2nd
Duncan struggled with getting a good set-up for the car in the earlier stages of the weekend while learning the circuit at the same time. Race one didn’t got to plan. In very wet conditions AC Milan and Beijing Gu’on collided and Duncan couldn’t avoid Beijing’s wing that was left on the track. It caught his left front tyre and caused a puncture. He made it back to the pits and changed the tyre but by then was over a lap behind so treated the race as an extended test session. He crossed the line in 12th.
Race two was more productive with a fantastic drive. The track was dryer but still wet enough to catch out some of the drivers. Duncan drove sensibly and kept the car on the track. The team managed a very good pit-stop and so from the ninth position that he emerged back on track Duncan was able to focus on moving up through the field including outbraking Robert Doornbos (AC Milan) to gain a place and a spectacular manoeuvre on Enrico Toccacelo in the AC Roma car for third. With four laps remaining Sevilla FC had a spin and Duncan and Tottenham Hotspur took the chequered flag in second place claiming another podium.
Tottenham Hotspur now has 149 points and lies sixth in the championship.
Duncan said: “It is great to be back on the podium. It’s the only place where racing drivers want to be. It’s also great for Tottenham Hotspur because the club needs a bit of good news at the moment. The first race wasn’t enjoyable at all. I couldn’t see anything. It helped to have the right visor for race two!
“The second race was a brilliant race for me. I could feel that the car was much better and it gave me confidence to push. It helped that we had a cracking pit-stop and made up two places there. It was really good to do some overtaking and end up in second position. It was just a case of having to judge it every lap. It wasn’t easy – a very hard race but I’m very happy.”
